Average Size: 3-4 inches
Lifespan: 10+ years
Hygiene and Health: Like all pets, their cages such by kept clean as best as possible. Another common product is
calcium blocks which is very benefiting to canary's or all birds for that matter.
Behavior: Canary's are great vocalists. They socialize by singing and do this a lot. Canary's enjoy bathing often and really are interesting to watch.
Diet: Always offer a canary fresh food and water. Canary's are open to many types of foods but you have to gradually change their diet. apple, orange, banana, berry, grape, corn, spinach, dark leaf lettuce, broccoli, carrot, and zucchini are some of the things safe for Canary's. Offer only at 1/2 sized at no more than 3 times a week. Canary's do need Vitamin D so the different foods will really help them be all the birds they can be with health.
Habitat:
A clean, roomy, secure cage out of direct sunlight and not too hot in the afternoon, or drafty is best. A single bird should have a cage of about 12'' x 12'' x 10'' at a minimum, but their is no limit to the size the cage can be. The cage should have 2 perches as well as food and water containers that the bird can figure out how to use. Avoid the tall and narrow cages because they are designed for budgies. Canary's tend to fly side to side as opposed to up and down.
Canary's will attempt to bath in their water dish if their bathing spot is not that good which will cause a little mess. Its recommended you try to keep a good dish for them to have a bath in.
Loner or Groupies: Its not recommended that you have two males in the same cage or even visible in the same room either. Even though it may seem ok in the beginning they will fight and compete. On the other hand if you do have 2 males putting them in separate rooms is very interesting because they respond very good to sound from each other. If you do want to have canary's together you'll need a male and a female and you'll have to get them used to each other by placing two cages together for a few days. and them open the doors of the cages and connect them if possible. Naturally on their own time they will enter each others habitats and get used to each other. This sometimes can be only an hour, but could be a few days to achieve them 100% together. There is a chance that they will not get along still in which you may have to keep them split up just as you would for two males. The canary's such be the same breeds to ensure safe and healthy babies in the chance it happens. You can group several canary's together though as fights will be minimal and their won't be any picking on one weak one for long enough to hurt them. Please note that there may be still an old Canary which does not get along with another.
Additional Info: Canary's are very easy to maintain. Canary's do not require much attention and are very content with being by themselves.
